Boomer’s Legacy has donated $20 000 towards the following two projects via our friends at HeroWorks:
Power to Be: The idea behind this non-profit is simple and powerful: help children, youth and adults living with a barrier or disability to explore their limitless abilities through inclusive adventures rooted in nature. Power To Be believes that everyone belongs in nature, with community support creating access to year-round programs. In 2016 Power To Be was given the opportunity to develop a recreational hub for their programming at the former Prospect Lake Golf Course. HeroWork’s 2017 mission is to renovate and build the property’s infrastructure so they can help even more people access inclusive adventures.
Anawim Companion Society: Anawim Companions Society is day house for people living in poverty and trying to find a new way of life. Through their family model, they empower people by working with them not for them. HeroWork will lift up this charity and make their home even better.
There is a special registration page for Boomer’s Legacy and Military members to volunteer with the Power to Be Project on 15-16 July, 2017 at the following link: https://www.giveffect.com/
*Note: When they check in they’ll have to tell the person at the desk that they signed up through the military page. We have confirmed that civilian Boomer’s Legacy committee members are welcome to use this page too.
For those who want to volunteer and those shifts/dates do not work with their schedule, we can arrange other dates and there are also public volunteer shifts available from 7-9 July and more on 15-16 July, 2017 that can be found at: http://www.herowork.com/
Shifts for the Anawim House Project will be in the months of Sept and Oct, 2017. They should become available in early August, 2017.
Capt Cori LeeThis is an excellent opportunity to experience first-hand how Boomer’s Legacy funds are being used to empower and enrich the lives of others in our community. I volunteered at the last ‘radical renovation project’ at the Rainbow Soup Kitchen and it was an amazing experience, extremely well organized and I met some very inspiring and kind people. No experience is required for most positions, just motivation to help! View the brochures from both organisations in PDF format below.
The HeroWork military sign-up page is now live. The next project is for Power-to-Be, which has inherited the former Prospect Lake Golf Course and will be transforming it into a place for people with barriers (physical, mental, or financial) to enjoy outdoor activities. The attached brochure provides details, and more can be found at herowork.com. Military members and their family/friends can sign up using the link below.
The jobs will include basic carpentry, fence-building, and landscaping – with landscaping requiring the most people. In total, the following number of people are required on each day:
· Saturday July 15: 35x
· Sunday July 16: 25x
